    About this event

Join us for a taste of local history as we sample innovative products made from two of Tropical North Queensland's most delicious offerings: sugarcane and coconuts.

    Exclusive to Resort Guests.

    The Sugar Cane Story

Long before tourism began in the Douglas Shire, sugar production dominated the local economy. After WW1, Australia needed farm workers and war-ravaged Europe responded to our call for help. Hundreds of farmers, mostly Italians, eager to work hard and establish a new life in Australia arrived in Far North Queensland. Here at Sheraton, we pay homage to these cane cutters from the past and honour their commitment and resilience during the past 100 years by featuring locally grown and distilled sugarcane rum in our Tasting Flights and Signature Cocktails.

Enjoy a sip of the ‘Sugarcane Paradise', featuring FNQ Rum Co. Platinum Spirit (made with local cane farmed on the nearby Atherton Tablelands), elderflower and fresh lime. Or, sample a sugarcane mocktail tinged with fresh ginger and lime.

    Coconut Craze

Some say that the coconut palm is the most useful plant in the world. Throughout Oceania, this swaying icon of paradise is oft referred to as the "Tree of Life" for all of its nutritional and practical benefits.

The Douglas Shire is home to more than 12,000 coconut palms, 300 of which live on the grounds of the Sheraton Port Douglas. Maintaining these beautiful trees is a labor of love. For the safety of our guests and the health of the plants, twice a year an arborist climbs the narrow trunks of every tree to remove nuts and aging fronds.

Harvesting coconuts has yet to be mechanized, but one local family is making delicious use of coconuts including those from the shores of Four Mile Beach. Enjoy the fruits of their labor and sample Beach Harvest's tasty coconut chips, made right here in Port Douglas.
