It is responsible for a large collection of objects, furniture and works of art with historical relevance, especially those that have some connection with the independence of Brazil and the corresponding historical period. One of the best known works in its collection is the painting "Independence or Death", painted by the artist Pedro Américo, in 1888, receiving an average of 350,000 annual visits.
