    About this event

Join us for a meaningful experience where guests, locals and visitors come together to be part of an important research project where debris are collected from famous Four Mile Beach and logged in the Australia Marine Debris Initiative database which comprises critical marine debris data collected by volunteers, communities and organisations across Australia to help the industry and government create change on a larger scale.

How you can help the Great Barrier Reef during your holiday.

The variety of species and habitats in the Great Barrier Reef make it one of the richest and most complex ecosystems on the planet. Though similar habitats occur elsewhere, no other World Heritage Area contains such biodiversity.

Covering 348,000 square kilometres, this vast expanse is bigger than the United Kingdom, Holland and Switzerland combined and equivalent to 70 million football fields.

Up to 40,000 pieces of plastic are estimated to float in every square kilometre of our oceans. 800 species worldwide including 77 Australian species are impacted by marine debris. Did you realise that over 75% of what is removed from our beaches is made of plastic?!

This is your opportunity to participate in one of our local beach clean-ups and help prevent marine debris entering the Great Barrier Reef!

During this monitoring event you'll be helping clean our beautiful Four Mile Beach whilst also gathering important information for the Australian Marine Debris Initiative.

The AMDI Database is an online platform that allows volunteers and organizations to submit and view data from beach and urban clean ups around Australia. Since 2004, over 20 million pieces of data have been inputted into the AMDI Database which includes community clean-ups and ReefClean.

The data we collect on the day is entered into the AMDI and guides management decisions around actions to improve water quality in our local waterways that flow to the Reef.

No prior experience is necessary as an expert coordinator from the Tangaroa Blue Foundation will teach you everything that you need to know on the day. The Foundation is an Australian not-for-profit organisation with a mission is to protect and preserve the marine and coastal environment by reducing marine debris.

    What you need.

Volunteers must wear enclosed shoes, bring sun/rain protection, and plenty of drinking water. We try to ensure that all events are free from single-use plastic, so bring along your reusable Marriott Bonvoy drinking bottle from your room!  All equipment and drinking water top-ups will be provided.

    The details.

Meet in Lower Daintree Lounge to learn what marine debris means for our oceans. Then join the cleanup, meet new people and make a difference.

The Beach Clean Up will conclude in the Business Centre after the data gathered from the day's activities is entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative online platform.
